What to do After a Fire

Having your property damaged by fire can be devasting. Your insurance account manager is there to help you through the process and answer any questions you might have. There are a couple things that you can do first though.

Do not enter your property and walk around. You may want to view the damage up close but there could be a lot of hazards within the damaged building and it’s important to keep yourself safe and healthy. Keep any other residents from entering the property as well – especially anyone with respiratory ailments. Lots of dust and other particles remain in the air after a fire.

By removing yourself and any residents from the structure, you may have to relocate temporarily. This means that you will have to secure the property to the best of your ability.

Contact your insurance company to report the damage and file a claim.

Contact a professional mitigation company. They will get started on cleaning and the restoration process in order to get your property back in livable conditions. If they are contacted quickly enough, they can help prevent fire damage from completely damaging or continuing to damage some metals, grout, fiberglass, furniture, flooring, and fabrics. If there are repairs that need to be completed, they will get the property ready for those repairs to take place.

Lastly, documenting any losses is important in order to have that all on the claim. Each loss will need to be assigned a value. It’s important for this to be done as thoroughly and as quickly as possible in order to help your claim be completed and reviewed as soon as possible.
